چکیده

This paper addresses the issue of modelling human forms of surprise and curiosity in an artificial perceptual agent. The following statements support our approach: humans are surprised when they perceive something that they did not expect; humans feel desire to learn more (i.e., feel curiosity) about novel (possibly unexpected) objects, usually manifested by focusing the senses on those objects in order to study and analyse them. We describe how external world is internally represented through graph-based representations in our model. In order to accomplish the task of modelling human surprise and curiosity, we describe two main measures: the measure of the difference (or novelty) of an object and the measure of the degree of not expecting an object. Based on these measures we propose approximate mathematical functions for surprise and curiosity. This approach is illustrated with an example of a perceptual robot that autonomously explores and studies its environment.

SC-EUNE - Surprise/Curiosity-based Exploration of UNcertain and UNknown Environments

This paper describes the architecture of SC-EUNE, a simulated artificial agent that explores uncertain and unknown environments guided by forms of surprise and/or curiosity. Besides describing the environment where it acts, we present the following components of its architecture: percepts, actions, goals, memory, surprise and curiosity generation, and deliberative reasoning/decision-making.

A curiosity model for artificial agents

Curiosity is an inherent characteristic of the animal instinct, which stimulates the need to obtain further knowledge and leads to the exploration of the surrounding environment. In this document we present a computational curiosity model, which aims at simulating that kind of behavior on artificial agents. This model is influenced by the two main curiosity theories defended by psychologists – ...

Eye movements reveal epistemic curiosity in human observers

Saccadic (rapid) eye movements are primary means by which humans and non-human primates sample visual information. However, while saccadic decisions are intensively investigated in instrumental contexts where saccades guide subsequent actions, it is largely unknown how they may be influenced by curiosity - the intrinsic desire to learn. While saccades are sensitive to visual novelty and visual ...

Surprise and Curiosity for Big Data Robotics

This paper introduces a new perspective on curiosity and intrinsic motivation, viewed as the problem of generating behavior data for parallel off-policy learning. We provide 1) the first measure of surprise based on off-policy general value function learning progress, 2) the first investigation of reactive behavior control with parallel gradient temporal difference learning and function approxi...

In this summary of previous work, I argue that data becomes temporarily interesting by itself to some selfimproving, but computationally limited, subjective observer once he learns to predict or compress the data in a better way, thus making it subjectively more “beautiful.” Curiosity is the desire to create or discover more non-random, non-arbitrary, “truly novel,” regular data that allows for...
